Wow, I really love this post. Not just for the content but for the passion you write with, its beautiful.

I have always tried to start journals, but was always afraid of someone finding them. I have varied photos from my past and have recently gained access to family albums from my mother and father's childhood as well as my early years. This post is definitely an inspiration to scan, archive and record what was going on in them.

Thanks.

I stopped taking pictures after a trip to Croatia in 1998 when I found the roll of film undeveloped a year later and ended up throwing it away (pre-digital). I was a mediocre and occasional picture taker before that, and found that, as a person that tends to observe instead of joining/acting anyway, it was an extra level of separation from what felt like 'real life'. I also thought that most postcards were better than my scene shots, and most pictures of people I knew ended up with closed eyes, blurs etc. Digital has changed all that, with the instant feed-back, but I didn't start taking pictures again until my son was born, I started the very next day with my partner's high-end digital camera (he is now a professional photographer, but I still chronicle the family - parallel to your parents maybe). I still take awful pictures though, and I hate how I can never capture what it is I see. I have all my old journals (except for my burned highschool one - it was pitifully banal), but I don't tend to save emails/etc on purpose. I guess I rarely have time to do anything but live my life. Sometimes I blog on it, but to save time from telling all my family and friends over and over what I am up to. In short, I'm glad you are saving info for those of us too challenged by getting through the now to do so!

Yeah, I'm a purely digital pack rat. Actually, I hardly even consider paper an information storage medium. All I've ever got to throw away are bits, and they don't need no stinkin' landfill

Info pack rats doesn't sound too bad, comparatively speakin, as long as it doesn't generate a landfill of paper.
